Ter Stegen faces setback in World Cup hopes

Marc-Andre Ter Stegen’s World Cup chances are under threat as Germany consider recalling Manuel Neuer, while his Barcelona future remains uncertain.

Marc-Andre Ter Stegen’s chances of making Germany’s 2026 World Cup squad appear to be in jeopardy as his future at Barcelona grows increasingly uncertain, according to a report from FOOTBALL ESPANA.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper has endured a difficult few months after undergoing back surgery in the summer and has yet to return to action. Before the operation, Barcelona reportedly informed him that he was no longer considered a first-choice option under coach Hansi Flick, who prefers Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny.

Despite initially expressing a desire to stay, Ter Stegen’s stance is said to be shifting ahead of the January transfer window. He is reportedly seeking more playing time to secure his position as Germany’s starting goalkeeper for the 2026 World Cup.

However, his hopes may suffer another blow as SportBild (via Sport) reported that German sporting director Rudi Voller has opened talks with 39-year-old Manuel Neuer about returning to international football. Neuer, who retired from the national team, could reclaim the number-one spot if he accepts a comeback.

Should Neuer return, Ter Stegen might remain at Barcelona, believing his chances of starting for Germany are slim — a scenario that would financially strain the Catalan club, which continues to pay his full salary.
