Barcelona legend Thierry Henry has slammed the decision to dismiss Pau Cubarsí during the Champions League quarter-final, arguing the referee failed to consider the match context before altering its course.
Thierry Henry has joined the chorus of criticism following Pau Cubarsí’s controversial red card against Atletico Madrid.
Speaking on CBS Sports, the former striker argued that the situation did not warrant a dismissal. “No, no, no… for me, that’s not a red card. I’m sorry,” Henry stated.
He questioned the certainty of a scoring chance, adding, “Are we sure he’s going to score? I’m not convinced.”
The Frenchman emphasized that high-stakes officiating requires absolute certainty. Henry suggested a yellow card would have been more appropriate to avoid prematurely deciding the game’s outcome.
He criticized the referee’s haste in the pivotal moment, concluding,
“In the Champions League, you have to be 100% sure. I think the referee was too quick on that one,” as ten-man Barcelona eventually succumbed to a 2-0 loss.
