Thomas Muller credits Scottish star Ryan Gauld with helping him settle so quickly at Vancouver Whitecaps, praising his teammate for making it easy to adapt to the MLS.

Bayern Munich legend Thomas Muller publicly praised Scotland star Ryan Gauld for being “key” to his seamless transition into the MLS and the Vancouver Whitecaps squad since arriving last summer.

According to a report from the Daily Record, Germany and Bayern Munich icon Thomas Muller has singled out Scottish midfielder Ryan Gauld for his role in helping him adapt to the MLS.

Muller, a World Cup and two-time Champions League winner, ended his 17-year spell with Bayern Munich last summer to join the Vancouver Whitecaps, where Gauld has been playing since 2021.

During a joint press conference, the 36-year-old caught the 29-year-old Gauld off guard by praising the club’s atmosphere.

Muller said: “One key (in helping me settle) was this guy next to me and his group.” He directly addressed Gauld, stating, “You were key, why I adapted so quick. You were leading a very good group and it was very easy to jump in.”

He then quipped, “They got me in good positions (in training) and every game they got a penalty for me!”

Muller emphasized his serious approach to the move, adding, “We are such a good group, with the environment in the whole club. I was not coming here for a vacation, I want to do a serious job and I want to perform.”

The Whitecaps, whose squad includes the former Dundee United and Hibs man, face a tough challenge in the MLS play-offs on Sunday against an LAFC side featuring stars such as Son-Heung Min and Hugo Lloris.

Gauld acknowledged the difficulty, stating, “We know we are capable of beating them but when it comes to the play-offs, it’s a one-off game and a lot of things can happen.”
