Troost-Ekong: Super Eagles ready to fight for 2026 World Cup ticket

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong says Nigeria will give their all in the CAF World Cup play-offs after missing out on an automatic qualification spot.

Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong has assured fans that the Super Eagles will give their best in next month’s CAF World Cup play-offs in Morocco, as the team eyes qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking on Wednesday, Troost-Ekong said the players are motivated by their 4-0 victory over Benin Republic in Uyo, which sealed Nigeria’s place in the play-offs. “We are quite happy to have that opportunity. It is a long route but it is a route after all. We would have loved to get the automatic ticket but it didn’t happen and we take what we have,” he said. “For us, we will remain strong and tough and ready to confront every challenge on our way.”

Nigeria’s triumph featured a hat-trick from Victor Osimhen and a late goal from Frank Onyeka. However, Rwanda’s 2-0 loss to South Africa denied the Super Eagles an automatic slot from Group C.

The Super Eagles will now face Angola in the CAF Play-offs semi-final on November 13, while Cameroon meets DR Congo a day later. Winners from both fixtures will clash for Africa’s sole intercontinental play-off spot in March 2026.
