Tunisia secured a dominant 3-1 victory over Uganda in their opening 2025 AFCON match, led by an Elias Achouri brace before a late consolation goal from Denis Omedi.
Tunisia launched their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a commanding 3-1 victory over Uganda at the Stade Olympique de Rabat on Tuesday night.
The North Africans took control early when Ellyes Skhiri headed home a corner from Hannibal Mejbri in the tenth minute.
Despite Uganda’s efforts to respond through Toby Sibbick and Jordan Obita, Elias Achouri doubled the lead before halftime with a spectacular strike that flew into the top corner.
The second half saw Uganda attempt a comeback with a double substitution, bringing on Travis Mutyaba and Denis Omedi.
However, the tactical shift failed to dampen Tunisia’s dominance. In the 65th minute, Achouri secured his brace by pouncing on a rebound to make it 3-0.
Uganda struggled to penetrate the Tunisian defense for much of the half, though Sibbick went close with a powerful effort that narrowly missed the upright.
The Cranes finally found a breakthrough in second-half stoppage time when substitute Denis Omedi scored a consolation goal via a deflected strike.
While the late goal denied Tunisia a clean sheet, the Carthage Eagles comfortably secured all three points to top the group standings.
Uganda’s coach Paul Put, who opted to start Salim Magoola over veteran Denis Onyango, will now look to regroup ahead of their next crucial group stage fixture.
