UEFA chief Aleksander Ceferin has confirmed Russia’s international football ban remains in place, rejecting FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s recent calls to reinstate the nation to help reduce “frustration and hatred.”
UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has reaffirmed that Russia remains banned from international competitions, despite FIFA President Gianni Infantino advocating for their return.
Infantino argued the suspension “has not achieved anything” and suggested FIFA statutes should prevent banning nations due to political leadership.
However, Ceferin remained firm at the Brussels Congress, stating, “UEFA’s position is clear and has not changed but we are looking into everything every day.”
While the ban persists, both leaders acknowledged the complexities of long-term exclusion. Infantino suggested that Russian youth participation “would help” bridge divides, while Ceferin admitted the “world is changing so fast.”
Although UEFA is not yet following the IOC’s lead in allowing neutral athletes, the door remains slightly ajar.
Reflecting on the evolving landscape, Ceferin concluded the discussion by saying, “Let’s see what the future brings.”
