VAR Controversy: Why Hwang Hee-chan dodges red card in Arsenal defeat

The VAR confirmed the on-field decision of a yellow card for Wolves’ Hwang Hee-chan after his reckless tackle on Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly, determining that the forward was deemed to be pulling out of the challenge.

Hwang Hee-chan controversially escaped a red card during Arsenal’s Saturday night clash against Wolves, following a heavy tackle on Gunners’ midfielder Myles Lewis-Skelly.

The Wolves striker was initially booked for the dive-in challenge, but the incident immediately prompted a full review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) team at Stockley Park for a potential sending-off offence.

Following the review, VAR officials John Brooks and Dan Robathan confirmed the on-field decision of a yellow card.

They ultimately deemed Hwang’s foul to be “reckless,” noting that he “tried to pull out of collision.”

The Match Centre for the Premier League later provided clarification on the verdict, upholding the booking instead of upgrading it to a red card.

The official clarification via social media stated:

“The referee’s call of yellow card was checked and confirmed by VAR – with Hwang deemed to be pulling out of the challenge on Lewis-Skelly and the contact on the foot deemed to be a reckless foul.”

This final decision came moments before Arsenal broke the deadlock against Wolves, scoring their opening goal from a set-piece situation.
