Nigerian striker Victor Boniface defends his current form and cryptic social media posts amidst criticism at Werder Bremen, asserting his struggles stem from injuries and unfair judgment, while manager Horst Steffen publicly supports his training efforts.
According to a report from Soccernet.ng, Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has defended his form and off-field habits, arguing he is being “unfairly judged” as he attempts to establish himself at Werder Bremen.
The 24-year-old Nigerian, who made a summer switch from Bayer Leverkusen, is yet to score in nine Bundesliga appearances and has not secured a regular starting spot.
Boniface insists his controversial social media posts—including the viral line: “Life is like a shoe, you can’t drink a cow because the earth is a carrot. Think about it,”—are harmless.
He explained his actions to the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger, saying: “I only post these things to distract myself a bit from everything else. It’s nothing serious. I’m not insulting anyone, it’s not hurting anyone, and it’s meaningless.”
He contrasts the current scrutiny with his time at Leverkusen: “I did the same thing when I was in Leverkusen. I’ve used this exact caption before. The difference is: back then I scored goals and we won everything. Nobody talked about it.”
He added that if a player scores goals, “everyone expects you to repeat that in exactly the same way the following season. Otherwise, people start talking.”
Meanwhile, Werder Bremen manager Horst Steffen strongly dismissed rumours suggesting the club is unhappy with Boniface’s attitude in training. Steffen told Weser Kurier:
“Who comes up with the idea of making such a statement? There are quite a few ways not to observe training.” He called the speculation “baseless and unhelpful,” publicly backing the forward to regain his confidence.
