Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has dismissed the possibility of Xabi Alonso taking the managerial reins at Old Trafford following his recent departure from Real Madrid, citing the Spaniard’s deep-rooted history with rivals Liverpool as an insurmountable barrier.
Speaking on the BBC’s Wayne Rooney Show, the pundit emphasized that despite Alonso’s “incredible” success at Bayer Leverkusen, the cross-club rivalry makes the appointment impossible, noting, “No chance it’s Alonso, no… I just don’t think you can.”
While Michael Carrick currently serves as interim manager after Ruben Amorim’s dismissal, Rooney identified current England boss Thomas Tuchel as his primary choice for the permanent role, stating, “Tuchel is the one for me. I just think he knows the Premier League, he’s won trophies, he’s doing well at England. Time will tell.”
