Welbeck brace seals Brighton’s 2-1 win over Newcastle

Danny Welbeck’s double handed Brighton a 2-1 win over Newcastle, despite Nick Woltemade’s spectacular back-heel equaliser.

Danny Welbeck scored twice as Brighton edged Newcastle 2-1 in a thrilling Premier League clash at the Amex Stadium on Saturday.

The former England striker gave Brighton the lead in the first half, calmly finishing past Nick Pope after Georginio Rutter’s smart build-up play. Newcastle thought they had earned a draw when Nick Woltemade equalised with a stunning back-heel from Lewis Miley’s pass in the 76th minute.

However, Welbeck restored Brighton’s advantage eight minutes later, curling home after Dan Burn blocked Mats Wieffer’s effort, handing Fabian Hurzeler’s side their third win this season against Champions League opposition.

Despite dominating large parts of the game, Eddie Howe’s men failed to convert their chances, with Bruno Guimaraes and Woltemade both coming close. Brighton keeper Bart Verbruggen also made key saves to deny the visitors.

Brighton’s clinical edge proved decisive as Welbeck’s late strike secured all three points for the Seagulls.
