Chelsea is facing intense backlash from Nigerian supporters after selecting Victor Moses over club legend John Obi Mikel to headline their inaugural “The Famous CFC” official fan event in Lagos this May.
Chelsea’s announcement of its first official fan engagement event in Nigeria has been overshadowed by controversy.
While the club confirmed 2013 AFCON winner Victor Moses as the event’s headline legend, fans have reacted with outrage over the exclusion of John Obi Mikel.
Critics on social media argue that Mikel’s ten-year tenure and trophy-laden career make him the undisputed face of the club in Nigeria.
The weekend-long programme in Lagos will feature live match screenings and Q&A sessions, but many supporters believe the snub is intentional.
Some speculate that Mikel’s vocal criticism of current manager Liam Rosenior and the club’s recent direction led to his omission.
One fan noted: “Mikel is a bigger Nigerian legend than Victor Moses. And it’s not even close,” highlighting the perceived disrespect.
Despite the friction, Chelsea intends to use the global tour to strengthen its African ties during a turbulent season.
Mikel remains one of Chelsea’s most decorated players, with two Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy to his name.
As the “Famous CFC” tour approaches, the club faces pressure to acknowledge the legacy of the man who made over 350 appearances for the Blues.
