Spain coach Sonia Bermúdez has recalled Jenni Hermoso and Mapi León for the Nations League semifinal against Sweden, marking the end of both players’ international exiles.
Spain’s record goal scorer Jenni Hermoso and defender Mapi León have been recalled to the national team for next week’s UEFA Nations League semifinal against Sweden, ending their time away from the squad.
New head coach Sonia Bermúdez, who replaced Montse Tomé after Spain’s Euro 2025 final loss to England, announced the changes on Thursday.
Hermoso, 35, last played for Spain in 2024 after being controversially omitted from the Euro 2025 squad for “technical reasons.” Her impressive form with Mexican side Tigres, where she has scored 13 goals in 15 games, earned her a return under Bermúdez, a former teammate.
León, meanwhile, returns for the first time since Euro 2022. The Barcelona defender was among the 15 players who protested working conditions within the national setup but had chosen not to return until now.
The squad also features seven changes from the Euro 2025 team, including the introduction of three uncapped players and the absence of injured midfielder Patri Guijarro.
Spain will host Sweden in Malaga next Friday before traveling to Gothenburg for the second leg, with the winners advancing to face Germany or France in the final later this year.
