Inter Milan goalkeeper’s car hits and kills 81-year-old in wheelchair

Inter Milan’s Josep Martinez is cooperating with police after a car crash that killed an 81-year-old man in a wheelchair.

Inter Milan goalkeeper Josep Martinez was involved in a car accident on Tuesday morning that resulted in the death of an 81-year-old man in a wheelchair, according to reports from Italy.

The tragic incident occurred around 10 a.m. in Fenegro, as Martinez was driving to training. Local reports indicate that the elderly man’s motorised wheelchair veered into the goalkeeper’s path, possibly due to a medical emergency. Despite Martinez’s attempts to administer first aid, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency services arrived.

Martinez, who was not physically injured, is said to be deeply shaken. The Carabinieri, Italy’s police force, have launched an investigation, with the footballer cooperating fully.

Inter manager Christian Chivu cancelled his scheduled press conference ahead of the team’s Serie A clash with Fiorentina.

Martinez, a Spain international and Inter’s second-choice goalkeeper behind Yann Sommer, joined the club last year and has made two appearances this season.
