Lucas Paqueta received a bizarre red card for West Ham against Liverpool, who then secured a 2-0 victory with goals from Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo, ending their dismal run of away losses and easing pressure on Arne Slot.
According to a report from Liverpool.com, West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paqueta was involved in a “bizarre red card” incident during the latter stages of Liverpool’s Premier League victory at the London Stadium.
The Brazilian, who had just returned from a prior suspension this weekend, was dismissed after receiving two yellow cards from referee Darren England in less than two minutes.
Paqueta was initially frustrated by a foul given against teammate Niclas Fullkrug and was shown a yellow card for complaining about the decision.
However, his “remonstrations went over the top,” persisting despite attempts by West Ham teammates and even Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson to restrain him. Due to the sustained protests, England “was left with no alternative but to show a second yellow.”
A “livid Paqueta” then sarcastically applauded the referee as he exited the pitch before continuing his protests with the fourth official.
Analyzing the incident, Sky Sports commentator Rob Green deemed the actions “completely irresponsible,” adding that the player “lost his head.”
Green concluded that the sending off “hasn’t helped the team in any respect, he’s not helped his side in the next eight minutes or his team for the next game.”
