Tolu Arokodare became Wolverhampton Wanderers’ first Nigerian Premier League goalscorer by netting an 90th-minute equalizer in their eventual 2-1 defeat to Arsenal.
Super Eagles attacker Tolu Arokodare etched his name into Wolverhampton Wanderers’ record books by becoming the first Nigerian player to score for the club in the Premier League.
The 25-year-old striker netted his maiden top-flight goal during Wolves’ dramatic 2-1 loss to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon, briefly levelling the score in the final minute of regulation time.
Arokodare’s late header resolved a long-standing debate over which Nigerian held the club’s record in the Premier League era.
Although former international Seyi Olofinjana scored several goals during his tenure at Molineux between 2004 and 2008, Wolves were competing in the Championship at the time.
The former Genk star now stands alone in setting this Premier League milestone for the Wanderers.
The goal came after Arsenal took the lead via Sam Johnstone’s own goal in the 70th minute. Arokodare’s 90th-minute strike appeared to salvage a point, but Wolves’ hopes were quickly dashed.
The visitors conceded a second own goal in stoppage time when Yerson Mosquera diverted a cross into the net, handing the Gunners the narrow 2-1 victory.
