Victor Osimhen has dismissed talk of chasing Rashidi Yekini’s goal-scoring record, insisting his sole focus is leading the Super Eagles to an AFCON title in Morocco.
Victor Osimhen has reaffirmed that his primary ambition is winning the Africa Cup of Nations rather than breaking Rashidi Yekini’s all-time scoring record.
Following his opening goal in Nigeria’s 2–0 victory over Algeria, the 27-year-old striker now boasts 35 international goals, trailing Yekini by just two.
Despite the milestone, Osimhen insisted, “I have said countless times that it doesn’t matter if I equal or surpass the record,” focusing instead on team success.
The striker paid tribute to the legendary Yekini, calling him the “best striker the Super Eagles have ever produced.”
Osimhen, who has scored nine goals in his last eight international appearances, emphasized that his confidence stems from his teammates rather than individual statistics.
He stated, “For me it is not about the goals or assists, it is just about winning something with this squad. We are on the right path.”
Coach Eric Chelle praised the team’s evolving identity and clinical second-half performance as they prepare for a semi-final against hosts Morocco.
The Super Eagles have responded to their recent World Cup qualification failure by winning five consecutive AFCON matches and scoring 14 goals.
Nigeria now looks to settle old scores in Rabat, the same city where their 2026 World Cup hopes were dashed during the playoffs last November.
