Former Super Eagles Coach Adegboye Onigbinde dies at 87

Veteran Nigerian football tactician and former Super Eagles coach, Chief Festus Adegboye Onigbinde, has passed away at the age of 87.

​Former Nigeria national team coach, Festus Adegboye Onigbinde, is dead. His family confirmed the passing of the veteran tactician on Monday, describing him as a revered patriarch and respected figure in Nigerian football.

A statement issued by Bolade Adesuyi read: “We announce the passing of this great man, a Modakeke High Chief, the 1st indigenous Nigerian Super Eagles football coach, father, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend.”

​Onigbinde was a trailblazer who earned a German Grade A coaching licence in 1976 and led Nigeria to the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations final.

Beyond his national team duties, he achieved significant success at the club level with Shooting Stars.

He remained an influential voice in the sport for decades, helping shape coaching education and youth development policies through his work with the NFF.
