Joan Laporta made history at the polls in Barcelona presidential election

Joan Laporta has been re-elected as FC Barcelona president with a resounding 68% of the vote, securing a fresh five-year term to oversee the club’s financial recovery and the completion of the Spotify Camp Nou.

Joan Laporta achieved a historic re-election on Sunday, securing 32,934 votes to remain FC Barcelona president until 2031.

This 67.93% majority is the second-highest win percentage in club history, trailing only Josep Lluis Nunez’s 1997 record.

Laporta’s dominant performance effectively “bulldozed” challenger Victor Font, who saw his support dwindle to 14,385 votes. The incumbent hailed the result as a “resounding strength” that makes the club “unstoppable.”

The mandate provides Laporta critical stability to navigate Barcelona’s ongoing €1.2 billion stadium renovation and staggering debt levels.

With the first phase of the North Goal at Spotify Camp Nou recently receiving occupancy permits, Laporta’s immediate focus remains completing the 105,000-seat project by 2027.

His campaign successfully leveraged the team’s current success under Hansi Flick and the emergence of home-grown superstar Lamine Yamal to win over members.

Looking ahead, Laporta faces the daunting task of balancing competitive sporting ambitions with strict Financial Fair Play requirements.

The president has pledged to further reduce the wage bill while maximizing new commercial revenue from the modernized stadium.

As the club targets a domestic treble this season, Laporta enters his fourth term promising that “the best years of our lives” are still to come for the Catalan giants.
