Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has expressed disbelief and outrage after CAF stripped the Lions of Teranga of their 2025 AFCON title to award it to Morocco following a controversial forfeit ruling.
Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has slammed CAF’s decision to strip his nation of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, describing the move as a “joke.”
Despite winning the final 1-0 in January, the CAF Appeals Board ruled Senegal forfeited the match due to a mid-game walk-off protest.
Mendy admitted the squad was blindsided, initially mistaking the official announcement for a prank.
The veteran shot-stopper detailed the “unprecedented” pressure faced in Rabat, citing crowd hostility and strange incidents involving the Moroccan bench.
While Senegal celebrated on the pitch, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation’s subsequent complaint overturned the result.
Refuting the ruling, Mendy noted: “We completed the match, secured the win and celebrated our triumph with widespread recognition – all signs of a deserved championship.”
