Bruno Fernandes leads Portugal mission to win World Cup for Ronaldo

Bruno Fernandes has pledged to help Portugal win the 2026 World Cup as a tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo, who is expected to play his final tournament.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has revealed his ambition to help Portugal win the 2026 World Cup as a tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo. He said winning the tournament would be the perfect way to honour his long-time teammate, adding that it would reward “everything Cristiano gave to football and the world.”

Fernandes, speaking in a BBC interview with Wayne Rooney, said, “I will try my best to make my country proud. Wrapping up this last World Cup with Cristiano (Ronaldo), winning it would be something amazing,” while Portugal boss Roberto Martinez praised Ronaldo’s enduring mentality, saying, “Cristiano’s head hasn’t taken that decision at 40, 41.”

At club level, Fernandes remains central to Manchester United’s plans after an 18-assist season, with reports stating he will not be sold this summer. Portugal begin their 2026 World Cup campaign in Group K against the Democratic Republic of Congo, as Fernandes leads hopes of a final triumph for Ronaldo.
