Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has turned off comments on a social media post after facing abuse from some Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo fans following the team’s World Cup elimination.
Fernandes didn’t hold back his emotions after Portugal’s last-16 exit to Spain. “Sad, frustrated, and disillusioned,” he wrote on X, per the Manchester Evening News, adding, “This group of players made my expectations high.”
The post drew backlash from some supporters, prompting Fernandes to disable comments. Katia Aveiro, Ronaldo’s sister, had earlier appeared to like a post criticising Fernandes’ performance after Portugal’s opening draw with DR Congo.
Portugal’s World Cup ended with Roberto Martinez announcing he would step down as head coach, saying: “It’s the end of the cycle.”
