World Cup hero Vozinha has new marine species named after him

Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has been honoured with a newly discovered marine species bearing his name following his standout performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has received an unusual honour after a newly discovered marine mollusk was named after him following his impressive displays at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to The Athletic, Spanish researcher Jesus Ortea named the tiny red sea slug Aldisa vozinhai in his published work Historias de la Bioadversidad, recognising the 40-year-old’s tournament performances and thanking the people of Cape Verde.

The species was discovered in the Caribbean near Havana, Cuba, and Guadeloupe. Vozinha starred with seven saves in Cape Verde’s goalless draw against Spain before helping his nation reach the knockout stage, later producing another seven-save display against Argentina.

Ortea previously named another marine species after Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas in 2019.
