UEFA reluctantly approves Barcelona vs Villarreal Miami game

Despite its opposition, UEFA has reluctantly approved a proposal for Barcelona and Villarreal to play a La Liga match in Miami, passing the final decision to FIFA.

UEFA has reluctantly approved LaLiga’s request to stage a league match between Barcelona and Villarreal in Miami, as well as a Serie A fixture between AC Milan and Como in Perth, Australia.

The governing body said on Monday that it remains “in clear opposition” to domestic league matches being played outside their home countries, but noted that FIFA’s current framework lacks clarity.

“Given that the relevant FIFA regulatory framework — currently under review — is not clear and detailed enough, the UEFA Executive Committee has reluctantly taken the decision to approve, on an exceptional basis, the two requests referred to it,” UEFA said.

The move follows months of debate and strong resistance from fan groups and European football institutions. UEFA added that it would continue working with FIFA to ensure future rules protect the integrity of domestic competitions and maintain the link between clubs, supporters, and their local communities.
