Bellamy admits he used Man United approach to secure Newcastle contract

Craig Bellamy has revealed he used Manchester United’s interest to negotiate an improved contract at Newcastle United.

Former Newcastle United striker Craig Bellamy has revealed he used Manchester United’s interest to secure a better contract at St James’ Park rather than push for a move to Old Trafford.

The Welsh forward said Sir Alex Ferguson’s side made an enquiry in 2002, but he chose to remain with Newcastle after the club qualified for the UEFA Champions League under Sir Bobby Robson.

According to Chronicle Live, Bellamy later signed an improved deal in January 2003 after contract talks resumed.

The former Wales international also disclosed that Manchester United explored another move in 2010 while he was at Manchester City, but the transfer never materialised because City refused to negotiate, despite his interest in the opportunity.
