Cesc FÃ bregas is facing a wave of online harassment, including racist messages, from Senegalese fans who hold him responsible for the injury sustained by forward Assane Diao just days before the AFCON, following FÃ bregas’s prior public disagreement with the player’s call-up.
According to a report from Foot Africa, Como coach Cesc FÃ bregas is facing intense backlash and a “wave of harassment” from Senegalese football fans following an injury to forward Assane Diao.
Diao was forced off the pitch in tears during Como’s match against AS Roma, casting serious doubt on his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations, which starts in just days.
The injury, which occurred after a powerful counter-attack, has sparked massive outrage among Senegalese supporters, particularly since the player was in the starting lineup despite being expected to join the national team shortly.
The fans hold FÃ bregas responsible due to his previous comments where he “had voiced his disagreement with the player’s call-up.”
The Spanish manager has become the target of online harassment, “sometimes accompanied by racist messages.”
Addressing the media, FÃ bregas felt compelled to explain himself and clarify his intentions. He confirmed the nature of the injury, stating: “He has injured his flexor muscle. I’m a big fan of national teams; I hope everyone gets the chance to go.”
He also referenced the tensions with the national team setup, mentioning “unpleasant” exchanges with the Senegal coach regarding the selection.
Amid this controversy, Assane Diao remains the primary casualty, now highly doubtful for what would have been his debut AFCON appearance.
