Courtois defends Lammens after costly Belgium World Cup error

Thibaut Courtois has thrown his support behind Senne Lammens after the goalkeeper’s costly mistake helped Spain eliminate Belgium from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Belgium captain Thibaut Courtois has defended goalkeeper Senne Lammens after the Manchester United shot-stopper’s late error handed Spain a 2-1 victory in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals.

According to GiveMeSport, Lammens replaced the injured Courtois with 20 minutes left before spilling Pau Cubarsi’s long-range effort into the path of Mikel Merino, who scored the decisive winner.

Courtois revealed he immediately embraced Lammens after the final whistle, describing him as a “great goalkeeper” with the character to recover from the setback.

He also expressed confidence that Lammens would regroup during the off-season before returning to Manchester United.

The Real Madrid goalkeeper also disclosed that he wanted to continue despite his injury but said Belgium coach Rudi Garcia preferred a fully fit replacement.

Defender Brandon Mechele echoed his support, calling the incident a learning experience while insisting the team should also share responsibility.
