Espanyol Sporting Director Fran Garagarza is recovering in intensive care after suffering a heart attack but is reported to be in a stable condition.
Espanyol Sporting Director Fran Garagarza has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Sant Pau Hospital in Barcelona after suffering a heart attack on Tuesday, according to reporting from Football España. The 56-year-old is in a stable condition and is currently under close observation by medical staff.
The incident occurred early Tuesday morning when Garagarza felt unwell at his residence. He immediately contacted the Espanyol club doctor, who quickly raised the alarm and alerted emergency services, ensuring he received prompt medical attention. A club statement later “confirmed as much,” acknowledging the situation.
Garagarza has been described by sources as conscious at all times since the incident. He is set to remain in the ICU for a critical 48-hour period, which will determine the course of his further treatment.
A message of calm has been communicated by those close to the sporting director, albeit one with caution and prudence. Head of ownership group Velocity Sports Limited, Alan Pace, was among the first to send a public message of support.
The 56-year-old is expected to require several weeks of recovery. In the interim, data analyst Unai Ezkurra and assistant Ander Garitano will handle the Sporting Director’s duties.
Garagarza’s work has been paying dividends this season, with Los Pericos currently achieving European positions in the league table following a successful transfer window.
