A 19-year-old man was arrested for allegedly verbally abusing Manchester United’s Mason Mount during a Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur, prompting a police investigation and a strong response from both clubs.
A 19-year-old Tottenham fan was arrested last Saturday on suspicion of verbally abusing Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount during the Premier League draw against Tottenham, according to a report from The Athletic.
The individual was ejected from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after a staff member allegedly overheard the offensive comment and reported it to the Metropolitan Police.
The police confirmed the man’s arrest on suspicion of “intentionally causing harassment, alarm, or distress.” He has since been released on bail as the investigation remains ongoing.
Tottenham Hotspur responded swiftly, confirming their cooperation with the authorities in a statement to the publication:
“The club is aware of the arrest of a supporter for alleged verbal abuse directed at an opposing player during Saturday’s Premier League match against Manchester United.”
The club emphasized its zero-tolerance approach, noting that all ticket holders had received pre-match guidance regarding discriminatory chanting, specifically homophobic chanting.
Tottenham further vowed to take “the strongest possible action” against any supporter found guilty of using discriminatory language, including measures such as participation in a fan education program.
The incident, which occurred during the 2-2 Premier League fixture, underscores the continued scrutiny of fan behaviour in English football.
