Morocco make history as first African nation to reach back-to-back World Cup quarter-finals

Morocco have become the first African nation to reach the World Cup quarter-finals in consecutive tournaments, crushing co-hosts Canada 3-0 in the round of 16.

Atlas Lions Crush Canada 3-0 to Achieve What No African Side Has Ever Done

Azzedine Ounahi scored twice and Soufiane Rahimi added a third in the 98th minute to seal a dominant victory in Houston. Despite Canada controlling the first half, Morocco’s clinical finishing proved decisive, MARCA reports.

The Atlas Lions, who made history in Qatar 2022 as the first African side to reach a World Cup semi-final, have now achieved another continental first. Only Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002 and Ghana in 2010 had previously reached the quarter-finals from Africa — none did it twice. Morocco now await either Paraguay or France in the July 9 quarter-final in Boston.
