The football GOAT debate has officially moved from players to managers — and it’s getting heated. ESPN has reignited the endless argument over whether Pep Guardiola or Alex Ferguson is the greatest manager in Premier League history.
On paper, Ferguson still owns the crown. The legendary Manchester United boss won 13 Premier League titles across 21 seasons and built multiple title-winning teams over different eras. Guardiola, though, has completely changed how modern football is played. The Manchester City manager has won six Premier League titles, delivered a historic Treble and turned City into an unstoppable machine.
According to ESPN, Guardiola’s insane trophy-per-season ratio and tactical influence have made the comparison closer than ever. Some pundits even believe Pep has already surpassed Ferguson in pure coaching quality.
Reuters recently reported Guardiola will leave Manchester City at the end of the 2025-26 season after a decade in charge. During that run, he transformed City into one of football’s greatest dynasties, winning multiple league titles, domestic cups and the Champions League.
Still, Ferguson supporters argue longevity matters. Fergie rebuilt Manchester United again and again while staying dominant for over two decades — something almost impossible in modern football. Guardiola’s critics also point to the massive spending power behind City’s rise.
One thing’s certain: there’s no easy answer. But the fact Pep is even being compared to Ferguson tells you just how ridiculous his legacy has become.
