Rooney didn’t hold back on BBC: “We got ourselves in such a good position and we didn’t know what to do… if you allow Messi and Argentina to come onto you, you’re asking for trouble.” Joe Hart and Alan Shearer echoed the criticism, noting the changes freed Messi to dictate the closing stages.
England face France in Saturday’s third-place play-off.
