UEFA has praised FIFA’s withdrawal of its private investment proposal while calling for reforms to restore trust and improve the governance of world football.
UEFA has welcomed FIFA’s decision to withdraw its controversial proposal to sell a stake in its competitions, including the FIFA World Cup, into private hands.
In a strongly worded statement, UEFA said the plan had been unanimously rejected by its member associations and opposed by federations, leagues, clubs, players and governments worldwide.
According to UEFA, the decision marks “a victory for the whole game” after widespread resistance to the proposal.UEFA also criticised FIFA’s leadership, accusing it of pursuing an opaque process that lacked transparency and damaged trust across world football.
The governing body said it would work with member associations, other confederations and key stakeholders to strengthen the existing FIFA Forward programme and improve resource distribution.
UEFA added that rebuilding confidence in FIFA has become the priority following the collapse of the proposal.
