DR Congo’s celebrated motionless supporter, Lumumba Vea, will miss the Leopards’ World Cup opener against Portugal after travel clearance delays kept him from reaching the US in time.
DR Congo’s most recognisable fan won’t be cheering or rather, standing perfectly still when the Leopards open their World Cup campaign against Portugal.
Lumumba Vea, famous for his statue-like tributes to independence hero Patrice Lumumba, has been held up by travel clearance delays, according to Vanguard. He won’t reach the United States in time for kickoff.
It’s a familiar headache. Vea also missed DR Congo’s World Cup playoff against Jamaica earlier this year after visa problems struck. This time, the country’s president reportedly stepped in personally to fast-track his paperwork following pleas from the team.
Vea is expected to join the squad before their next match against Uzbekistan, leaving fans hopeful his trademark stillness returns just in time.
