Kevin Phillips has criticized Anthony Gordon’s “arrogant” post-match comments following the Black Cats’ dramatic Tyne-Wear derby victory over Newcastle United.
Sunderland icon Kevin Phillips has hit back at Anthony Gordon after the Newcastle winger dismissed the Black Cats as “not a very good team” following Sunday’s derby.
Despite Gordon’s early strike, goals from Chemsdine Talbi and Brian Brobbey secured a 2-1 comeback win for Sunderland.
Phillips argued that Sunderland was “far superior” in the second half and fully deserved a victory that left Newcastle fans booing.
The legendary striker advised the England international to show more humility after losing both derbies this season.
Addressing the comments on talkSPORT, Phillips said: “I would just keep my head down, keep quiet and crack on with my work.”
He emphasized that while Gordon is a “fantastic player,” his dismissive attitude was misplaced after a performance where many Newcastle players simply failed to turn up.
