England’s World Cup last-16 clash against Mexico is now set to kick off at 19:00 BST on Sunday, after Fifa moved the fixture from its original 01:00 BST Monday slot. According to the BBC, the change is understood to be linked to forecasts of thunderstorms and heavy rain around the original kick-off time, though Fifa has not officially explained the decision.
Tournament rules require a 30-minute delay if lightning is detected within eight miles of the stadium. England winger Marcus Rashford described the switch as “not ideal” but insisted the squad was prepared for any challenge. The match at the high-altitude Estadio Azteca will now be played in warmer midday conditions, with temperatures expected to hit around 26C, adding another test for both sides.
