Arsenal wouldn’t be ‘ champions’—Klopp launches explosive refereeing rant after Germany crash out

VIA MARCA:

The elimination of Germany at the 2026 World Cup continues to generate massive controversy. Die Mannschaft fell to Paraguay in a dramatic penalty shootout during the round of 32 but the absolute focal point of the discussion centers on a disallowed goal in extra time that could have completely altered the outcome of the match.

The German squad went wild celebrating what they believed was a 2-1 lead when defender Jonathan Tah scored with a powerful header from a corner kick in the first half of extra time. However after a lengthy VAR review the referee overturned the goal ruling that Waldemar Anton had committed a foul against Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill.

The controversial decision sparked a wave of furious criticism back in Germany. Among the first to speak out was legendary manager Jurgen Klopp who harshly questioned the refereeing standards and compared the disallowed goal to standard plays regularly seen in English football.

If that’s a disallowed goal then Arsenal wouldn’t be English champions. They scored 60% of their goals like that. So that’s obviously brutalKlopp

Refereeing experts slam demanding VAR intervention

The backlash did not stop there. Patrick Ittrich a referee analyst for MagentaTV argued that VAR should never have intervened in the first place because in his professional view the play did not constitute a clear mistake by the match official.

“For me that is not a clear and obvious error by the referee” Ittrich stated.

The former referee added that the action was interpreted in a far too strict manner on the pitch.

“For me that’s too pedantic. I don’t see any pushing or shoving” he noted.

Sharing the exact same sentiment was Thorsten Kinhofer a referee analyst for the ZDF network who did not hide his complete disbelief over the decision made by the refereeing crew.

“We’ve seen far worse situations at this World Cup and the goalkeeper gets straight back up. That’s a normal contact and never a foul” Kinhofer sentenced.

The refereeing decision ultimately proved to be completely decisive as Germany was later eliminated in the penalty shootout while Paraguay advanced to the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup pulling off one of the biggest upsets of the entire tournament.
