Falkland Islanders are backing Spain in Sunday’s World Cup final, angered by Argentina’s “The Falklands are Argentine” banner after their semi-final win over England.
Falkland Islanders are throwing their support behind Spain for Sunday’s final, furious after Argentina’s players unfurled a “Falklands are Argentine” banner following their semi-final win over England, The Telegraph reports.
Islander Charles Dickson said he hoped Argentina would lose “just as badly as they did in 1982,” while June McMullen, who endured 29 days in captivity during the war, called Fifa’s response “toothless.”
Sir Keir Starmer’s spokesman said Fifa’s action was a matter for the governing body, adding self-determination “rests with the islanders.”
Argentina’s president Javier Milei defended the banner as “understandable,” while Fifa said it was assessing the incident.
