Fernandez set for Man Utd return as Chelsea struggles continue

Enzo Fernandez returns from suspension as Chelsea balance his importance against contract tensions, transfer interest, and mounting financial constraints.

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez is set to return this weekend following a two-match internal ban, but uncertainty over his long-term future persists. The 25-year-old sparked controversy during international duty after expressing a desire to live in Madrid, amid links to Real Madrid. The suspension, backed by coach Liam Rosenior and senior players, has now been lifted.

Fernandez missed key fixtures, including Chelsea’s FA Cup semi-final win over Port Vale and a league defeat to Manchester City. His agent, Javier Pastore, warned Champions League absence could influence his future, stating, “He deserves much more than he is currently earning.” Chelsea remain four points behind Liverpool in the race for qualification.

Despite the episode, Chelsea still view Fernandez as a key asset, though contract talks are delayed until summer. Financial constraints, including over £200m in amortisation costs and a reported £262m pre-tax loss, limit flexibility. Having spent over £1.5bn since 2022, the club may demand a fee near the Eden Hazard transfer benchmark to sanction a sale, highlighting tensions between ambition and sustainability.
