FIFA bans goalkeeper ‘tactical timeouts’ at 2026 World Cup

Players at the 2026 FIFA World Cup will no longer be allowed to gather around coaches when goalkeepers go down injured, as FIFA moves to end so-called “tactical timeouts.”

Referees will keep players on the pitch during stoppages. FIFA has also expanded VAR powers, allowing reviews of attacking fouls before corners and free-kicks, while introducing tougher measures to curb time-wasting.
