Qatar midfielder Ahmed Madibo has received a five-match ban from FIFA after the challenge that left Canada’s Ismael Kone with a broken leg during their World Cup group stage clash.
The 29-year-old was already shown a red card in Qatar’s heavy 6-0 defeat last Thursday, but BBC Sport reports that FIFA’s disciplinary committee has since extended the punishment for serious foul play a decision that remains open to appeal.
Kone, 24, suffered fractures to both the tibia and fibula in his lower left leg and will play no further part in the tournament. The Sassuolo man underwent surgery in Vancouver and was later visited in hospital by Madibo himself.
Canada face Switzerland on Wednesday targeting top spot in their group, while Qatar must beat Bosnia-Herzegovina to stay alive in the competition.
