Same old story: Europe dominates World Cup quarter-finals again

Despite the World Cup’s expansion to 48 teams, Europe still dominates the quarter-finals with six of the eight remaining nations, according to Vanguard News.

More teams, same story. Six of the eight World Cup quarter-finalists are European, with only Argentina and Morocco breaking the trend.

Europe’s share of overall spots has shrunk from 14 of 24 in 1990 to 16 of 48 now, yet its dominance at the sharp end persists — even topping the five European sides that reached this stage four years ago.

Morocco, Africa’s lone survivor, leaned on both homegrown talent and Europe-born players like Achraf Hakimi and Brahim Diaz.

Brazil, meanwhile, crashed out before the quarters for the first time since 1990, extending their losing streak against European knockout opposition since 2002.
