Sunderland have rejected Chelsea’s opening £8 million bid for captain Granit Xhaka, insisting the Swiss midfielder is not for sale despite reports he has already agreed personal terms with incoming Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso.
SUNDERLAND REJECT CHELSEA’S XHAKA BID
Chelsea want Granit Xhaka. Sunderland have a one-word answer: no.
The Stadium of Light club have knocked back an opening £8 million offer from Stamford Bridge for their Swiss captain, per reports, insisting the 33-year-old midfielder is not available despite strong interest from incoming Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso.
The Alonso connection is significant — the pair previously combined at Bayer Leverkusen during their historic unbeaten domestic double in 2024, and Xhaka is reportedly keen to reunite with his former manager, with personal terms allegedly already agreed verbally.
Sunderland, however, are unmoved. Xhaka started 32 Premier League matches last season, captained the club to seventh place and Europa League qualification, and holds a contract until 2028.
The club consider him indispensable to their continental ambitions.
