Tuchel tears into England stars as Croatia expose World Cup nerves

Thomas Tuchel’s first World Cup match in charge of England was marked by visible frustration as he publicly challenged Jordan Pickford and Noni Madueke during a nervy, error-strewn display against Croatia.

Thomas Tuchel got his first taste of World Cup football as England manager, and it quickly became clear he wasn’t enjoying everything he saw.

England made a dream start against Croatia in Arlington, Texas, with Harry Kane opening the scoring from a retaken penalty after a VAR review found both Josko Gvardiol and goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic had infringed. Kane later grabbed a second goal, but despite twice taking the lead, England’s performance left Tuchel visibly frustrated.

The German coach was reportedly overheard confronting goalkeeper Jordan Pickford during a hydration break. Pickford had allegedly ignored instructions while playing out from the back, prompting Tuchel to snap: “Do as I told you.”

The Everton goalkeeper reportedly responded, although exactly what was said remains unclear. The exchange highlighted the tension building on the touchline as England struggled to impose themselves despite Kane’s clinical finishing.

Pickford wasn’t the only target of Tuchel’s anger. As talkSPORT reported, winger Noni Madueke was also called over and told to push higher up the pitch after England won the penalty. Tuchel was described as highly animated throughout the opening stages, with assistant coach Anthony Barry even stepping in to calm him down.

Barry’s half-time assessment was equally brutal. Speaking to ITV, he described England’s first-half display as “complicated and confusing,” blaming poor decision-making and nervous energy. He criticised the team for repeatedly choosing the wrong passing options, going long when they should have played short and vice versa.

Croatia punished those mistakes. Martin Baturina’s stunning strike cancelled out England’s opener before Petar Musa struck on the stroke of half-time to make it 2-2.

As reports from Sports Bible highlighted, Tuchel’s fiery reactions reflected a manager demanding more from his players on football’s biggest stage. England may have had Harry Kane firing, but their new boss made it clear standards will not drop, even in victory.
