A serious allegation has emerged against Cape Verde’s World Cup captain.

Ryan Mendes, 36, has been accused of forcing his way into a Brazilian translator’s hotel room in Auckland during a March FIFA Series trip, where he allegedly choked, punched, bit and raped her, according to the New York Post, citing Brazil’s Globo news outlet.

The woman said she approached at least three Cape Verdean football officials who did not respond to her complaint.

New Zealand police have collected hotel security footage and are awaiting forensic results before deciding whether to charge Mendes. FIFA said it is in contact with authorities and takes misconduct allegations “extremely seriously” but declined further comment.

Mendes has not responded to the allegations.
