Former England captain Alan Shearer has criticised Enzo Fernandez for his dismissal in Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, insisting the Chelsea midfielder “cost his country.”
Fernandez received a second yellow card in extra time after a reckless challenge on Pau Cubarsi, having earlier been booked for dissent.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football, Shearer described the decision as “stupid,” arguing Argentina’s chances faded the moment they were reduced to 10 men. Ferran Torres went on to score the decisive goal as Spain lifted the trophy.
Micah Richards also condemned Leandro Paredes’ conduct during the post-match confrontation, calling the scenes “embarrassing,” while praising teenage defender Pau Cubarsi’s composed display and rapid development.
Spain’s Rodri claimed the Golden Ball, Unai Simon won the Golden Glove and Cubarsi was named Best Young Player.
